Mumbai, Jun 14 (PTI) The Bombay High Court today ticked off former Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjeev Dayal while hearing a case where police allegedly tried to "settle" a rape complaint instead of probing it and filing FIR when he was at the helm.
The division bench of Justices B H Marlapalle and U D Salvi was hearing a petition filed by social activist Aminuddin Saeed seeking action against an assistant police inspector, Balasaheb Khade, for allegedly demanding compensation for settling a rape case.
Following the court's direction, Dayal, the then police commissioner, stated in his affidavit that Anti- Corruption Bureau had informed him that Khade did not ask for bribe for himself but "was pleading on behalf of the victim".
Justice Marlapalle observed today that it was offence of rape and police's job was to investigate and arrest the accused and not to negotiate on behalf of the victim.
