Fasting Ascetic's Death: Congress Targets Ramdev, BJP

Dehradun/New Delhi, Jun 14 (IANS): The death of a 34-year-old ascetic, Swami Nigamananda, after fasting for over two and a half months to save the Ganga from pollution, came in handy for the Congress to hit out at the BJP, saying the opposition party should have supported his cause instead of the "high flying" Baba Ramdev.

Nigamananda died Monday at the Himalayan Institute in Dehradun, where coincidentally Ramdev was also admitted after his health deteriorated on the seventh day of his fast against corruption. Ramdev was discharged Tuesday.

"The saint (Nigamananda) was fasting for the Ganga since the last many days. He laid down his life for the Ganga. I pay my tribute to Swami Nigamananda," Ramdev told reporters.

In New Delhi, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh, taking pot shots at the BJP, said Nigamananda was fasting for more than 100 days and there was no reaction "whatsoever" to his campaign from the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Uttarakhand government.

"Here is a high-flying swami Ramdev who is on a money making spree, raising issues which he does not understand, raising issues which he does not comprehend and gone on a hunger strike,... and you have leader of opposition, and the chief minister visiting there," he said.

Singh was referring to senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal's visit to Ramdev when he was on his fast at his ashram in Haridwar.

Singh also slammed spiritual leaders who met and urged Ramdev to break his fast. Ramdev broke his fast Sunday at the request of spiritual and religious leaders, including Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Morari Bapu.

"Swamis all over were reaching there and making him break his fast. I think this is what the BJP is, they say something and do something," he said, adding that the BJP should have supported Nigamananda "which they have not done because of which he had to die".

Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi also took on the BJP and the Uttarakhand government.

"The government had all the information. Despite that it did not pay attention (to the ascetic). I feel that everyone should convey their feelings against this insensitivity," he said, adding that the state government should ensure that "such incidents do not recur."

This incident shows how congress party look into india's problems. They even dont bother if someone die due to hunger strike. How we can say this party is running Mahatma Gandhi's principles? Its running with Sonia Gandhi's principles.

Mr Arun CK,Mangalore, accept the fact that Uttarkand Govt headed by BJP govt simply ignored Swamy Nigamananda's issue of illegal sand minig of Ganga River which pollutes the water. The reason
simply because he has no followers and money power like Baba Ramdev had.BJP has acute short of issues to fight with UPA.

Baba Ramdev, dumped his co- fasters unto death from Ramlila Maidan and wearing Salwar Kameez escaped from scene mysteriously!!!!Do an Guru/Baba/Sanyasi or a social worker need this type of behavior?Yet, BJP's front-line leaders supported him and visited him again and again.BJP is exposed beyond doubt that later in the scenario it neither subscribe absurd press statement nor stand by Baba's pre matured and impossible demands! In the process Utterakand CM or BJP Chiefs of State did not make any effort to address swamy nigmanand's demand for more than hundred days of his fasting unto death. Now tell us Mr ARUN CK,is BJP giving priority to issues or politics? BJP lost all credibility and being a national party, it has some responsibility and respect in solving the issues of public interest.OK let it make political benefit in any issues of public but there should be a stand on the issues and persons which should not hurt its image.BJP under present circumstances looks like a 'LAUGHING STOCK'

So many examples of double standards by BUNCH OF JOKERS PARTY (BJP). they consider Yeddyurappa saint and wanna wait till he is proved guilty, whereas for other cases they ask for resignation the moment some one (at their behest) raises a finger. Monkey business tycoon ramdev was given a heroes status whereas the real swami was ignored, that too fighting for a river considered so holy to hindus. isnt bjp and rss supporting the cause of hindus?? this shows their true colours and intentions
