Assembly election 2023: Tough fight awaits in Mangaluru South

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Mar 3: With the election just a few months away, all eyes are on the Dakshina Kannada district to see whether the probable candidate from Congress or BJP will retain their seat in Dakshina Kannada or whether Congress will gain the upper hand in seven constituencies.

The Mangaluru South constituency always sees an intense fight during the elections as every leader eyes a ticket from the constituency.

Since 1972, the Mangaluru constituency has been reserved for the Christian quota as Congress has given tickets to the specific community, including Eddie Saldanha, P F Rodrigues, Blasius D'Souza, Lancelot Pinto, Ivan D'Souza, and J R Lobo, with Eddie Saldanha becoming the first female MLA of Mangaluru in 1972.

In the 2023 elections, J R Lobo, Ivan D'Souza, Shalet Pinto, and Naveen D'Souza are on the probable list to contest from the Mangaluru South constituency, while Shashidhar Hegde and Padmaraj are also aspirants who have applied for the 2023 elections.

BJP’s Yogesh Bhat holds the record of being a four-term MLA in the Mangaluru South Constituency from 1994-2013. In 2013, Yogesh Bhat could not get past Congress candidate J R Lobo, who defeated him by a margin of 12,275 votes.

As an MLA, J R Lobo has always been a people’s leader with a progressive mindset. Mangaluru South is a place where there is a lot of scope for development. During his tenure, several development works were undertaken, and he had a strong vision for the overall development of Mangaluru.

Despite being at the forefront of development works, the controversy over the Mulky Sundaram Shetty road was a huge setback for Lobo and Congress in Mangaluru South.

After Yogesh Bhat’s defeat against JR Lobo, there was a huge question for BJP to field their candidate in the 2018 elections. Except for the 2013 election, since 1994, Mangaluru South was BJP’s stronghold. BJP had to go back to their drawing board to see what went wrong in the 2013 elections so that they could come back strongly in the 2018 elections.

BJP was facing the 2018 elections as a matter of pride and honor to get back the Mangaluru constituency from Congress. BJP had faith in Vedavyas Kamath, who served as the general secretary of BJP Mangaluru South unit, and named him as the contestant for the 2018 polls against JR Lobo. It seems that BJP had done their homework well as Vedavyas Kamath managed to get past JR Lobo with a huge margin of more than 16,000 votes and ensured BJP’s existence in Mangaluru South.

In his maiden tenure, Vedavyas Kamath has gained the confidence of the public with his approach and is confident to head into the 2023 elections. Vedavyas Kamath is known for his teamwork and ability to bring everyone together. In his tenure, Vedavyas has been involved in calm politics while raising several issues in the session pertaining to the development of Mangaluru.

This time around, it will be a tough challenge for Congress to field the right candidate in Mangaluru South to face Vedavyas Kamath.

Results in 2018
Vedavyas Kamath – 86,545
J R Lobo – 70,470

Results in 2013
J R Lobo – 67,829
Yogesh Bhat – 55,554

Total elections – 15
Congress – 9 (1952, 57, 62, 67, 72, 78, 85, 89, 2013)
BJP – 6 (1983, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2008, 2018)

Most BJP MLA's have done good job in development front..it is visible . Mr Kamath ,Bharat Shetty,Harish Poonja,Rajesh Naik ,Sunil Kumar ,all have done good work . Nonperformers in BJP are Mr Angara and Srinivas Poojary. Mr Lobo has done selective development work ..only areas belonging to a particular section of the society. Though their constituencies are different I would prefer Mr Khader over Lobo.

Simple arithmetic. In a democracy majority numbers decide the winning candidate. Hindus form 68.9 % of the population in the constituency according to the last census. Unfortunately voting being on religious grounds, it is better Congress fields a winnable Hindu candidate. Satya Kadwa Hota Hai, more disagree than agree for my comment.

Ashith Pereira is one among the other aspirants from Congress for Mangaluru South constituency. I know him personally as he was my junior and I did see the leadership talents and skills in him during his college days. He is known to be cheerful and friendly to people around, always on the forefront with a helpful lending hand to those in need. He has served in various positions within the Congress party and has never hesitated to take the responsibilities despite any challenges that may arise. Moreover, Sri Rahul Ghandi Ji's vision for future India is empowerment of the Youth wherein more importance is given to them to fight the upcoming elections, because they are capable, energetic, and tolerant towards the community and it's development. Therefore, without any second thought and regrets, I am certain that the best capable candidate from Mangaluru South constituency should be Ashith Pereira👍👍

I think if anyone deserves the ticket from mangalore south it's Ashith pereira! He has good connect with the local people and young voters and is been very active from past several years! It can be a tough contest between bjp and Congress if he is given a ticket, since majority of youth votes can sway in his favour

As a nuetral political commentrator, I can only see two Congress as aspirants who could give a serious fight to the BJP here: 1. Shalet Pinto - The D.K Mahila Congress chief, she is with the public, people know her well, great organizer, orator, worked for the party since decades, was a zilla panchayat member, has decades of experience in social life, she is a non controversial women, does not have haters, respects all religions , liked & respected by people, not just a election time politician but 24*7 politician, one of the most active politicians across party lines in Dakshina Kannada. 2. Shashidhar Hegde - Ex Mayor, great party worker, corporator since decades, has great experience in social life, again non controversial, liked and respected by people, he was a 24*7 politician, but he is not very active like before these days, but much better compared to other horses. If Congress gives ticket to candidates like Ivan D'souza, it would be a political suicide, this time he may barely, be able to retain the deposit. Old war horse J.R Lobo may be able to retain the deposit but will not win. I feel only these two candidates will be able to give BJP a serious fight and bag the Mangalore seat back to the fold of Congress. If the Congress selects any of the above two as candidates, puts its house on order, works as a united team, stops division of votes, Mangalore South would be a sure shot win against the B.J.P.

'Tough fight' for what? Getting tickets in Congress.? Then I would say, yes. The electoral result is obvious. If the leaders who are mentioned above are fielded , its tough to dislodge Vedavyas Kamath. A new candidate will take time to campaign , reach out to the masses and identify with the people. It gen takes time . Congress should have acted fast . The old ones if fielded will give the same results like last time.

Not being harsh on him, but he could not even win a corporator election, that too the Kankanadi seat, which was previously held by Congress, so patience is the key. Winning college council elections in some year, does not mean people can be a MLA so fast . Every passing year we have college council presidents, even Naveen Dsouza was a student leader decades back and is more experienced. Student leaders now have no patience. With the illusion created by 10 chelas in college, they think they can come out of college & win MLA elections or become MP's. Look so the called youth leader Mithun Rai could not even win against uneducated Nalin, that too when Nalin was disliked and faced huge anti incumbancy. Mithun Rai lost by such a big margin of 2,74,621 votes in 2019, the worst ever margin loss for Congress in the history of Mangalore. Congress never lost it so big till date, even when Modi Mania was at peak during 2014. J.R lobo won the assembly elections in 2013 because he was calm, matured and non controversial at that time. Any rowdy type 'hawa' maintaining youth leader may be liked by 10 immature chelas who create a illusion of 'anna' around him, but will never be liked by matured Mangaloreans. This behaviour is suited in other regions not across the coast. People from Mangalore prefer politicians who are experienced, calm, non controversial, humble, suave and do not show attitude. Youth leaders should gain experience first, develop an humble attitude, work for the party organization and then stand for elections. First & foremost thing is that they have to gain patience and experience. Ashith is not a rowdy, he is non controversial, and has some good qualities, i heard he respects all religions, if he waits, works hard & spends time with people. I am sure he will be a great politician in another 10-15 years. Along with all these qualities he must impove his grooming, work full time & also dress up professionally like the Kerala based youth leaders.

Shri. J.R. Lobo is the best choice. Non-biassed, sensible, prudent, soft-spoken and who delivers with his performance. We know he is non-corrupt. We know how much pathetic road-projects happened last four & half years pls pls don't forget mess and mud everywhere(now last one month beautiful cover-up with election soon)... This is how our double-standard present work happen(s). Enough smell of financial leakage also has happened with smart-city road-projects and other projects. Congress to this day is not sure about their candidate. In fact BJP leaders like Shah visited Mangalore and rambelled as usual . They are way ahead in their campaign. A final visit by the PM will seal the opposition fate.
