World Record Holder 106-yr-old Dies in Himachal


Dharmsala, Jun 18 (PTI) Subedar Piara Singh, who along with his wife had claimed to be holding the world record of the oldest married couple, has died in Una at the age of 106, a couple of years after his spouse passed away.

Singh died of old age aliments yesterday at Takoli village in Una district, family sources said.

Singh and Hansa Devi (101) lived a married life of 85 years and 180 days till November 22, 2009, and enjoyed together an aggregate age of 205 years and 143 days. They entered wedlock on May 23, 1924.

A resident of Dari Barol near here, Singh went to attend the farewell function of his youngest son at Takoli.

Governor Urmila Singh and Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal have expressed grief over Singh's demise.

The couple attempted to enter into Agreement Regarding Record Attempt with the Guinness World Records in 2007.
