Govt May Warn NTPC of Cancellation of Another Two Coal Blocks

New Delhi, Jun 19 (PTI) After cancelling NTPC's five coal blocks last week, the coal ministry is likely to soon warn the power company that its two more fields will be deallocated if they are not developed immediately.

"We will soon send letters to National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) warning and directing them to develop Pakri Barwadih (Jharkhand) and Talaipalli (Chhattisgarh) coal blocks," an official in the Coal Ministry told PTI.

"Any further failure in development of the block(s) would lead to necessary action as per the terms and conditions of allocation, including deallocation of the coal blocks," the official said.

The estimated production capacity of Pakri-Barwadih block in North Karanpura coalfield in Jharkhand is 15 million tonnes (MT), while in the case of Talaipalli block in Mand-Raigarh coalfield in Chhattisgarh, it is 18 MT.

It is not only M/s NTPC that is facing problems in opening of coal blocks allotted to them but major no of companies in india.the reason being timeframe given by MoC which doesnt take into consideration the problems involved in statutory clearances like forest and environment.moreover ,the resistance from villagers for possesion of the land is ofcourse a mjor concern.just allocating the block does not mean to wash away with responsibilities as said above.if the govt really wants to have industrial development taking into considering the problems invoved in land aquisition,it should take a stand and keeping a balnace with environment destruction.most of the coal blocks are in forest area and thikly populated and one cant change the location of coal seams.it is the govt support and single window clearances apart from a very good R&R policy and dedicated CSR support are the only tools to get the coal blocks opened in short time.moreover, no coal block has been commenced its production in the time given by govt in the history of india.an in depth analysis of the problems invoved in land aquisition, forest and environment clearnces may be sorted at higher level with taking into confidence the different sections of the society
