Mangaluru: Street food festival brings city traffic issues to the fore

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Mar 27: The street food festival that concluded in the city brought traffic issues to the forefront. The public faced inconvenience because of the event.

Street Food Festival which began on March 22 got over on March 26. There were more than 200 outlets. This was held on footpath on a busy street area. In addition, only one way traffic was allowed after 4.30 pm.

Traffic was getting blocked on M G Road, Chilimbi, Urwa and Mannagudda areas. Customers, who arrived for the fest, loitered from one to another. Traffic police were trying their best to manage the smooth movement of vehicles.

The event is held throughout the country and overseas also. But no one organizes them during the week and in a manner that causes disturbance to public and traffic movement. However, in Mangaluru the food fest was organized on the busy stretch of Karavalu Utsava grounds and Narayanaguru Circle. This created utter chaos in the evening.

This fest could have been easily organized at Kadri Park or Mannagudda Road or any other street that is not busy. In addition, it should have been limited to weekends.

The city was already stinking due to the non-clearance of garbage by the civic workers as they were on indefinite strike. In the midst of this, the food fest was generating further garbage and clearing that had become a big headache to the city corporation.

Mangaluru city police commissioner Kuldeep R Jain who arrived for the inauguration of the food fest had also showed his unhappiness. He said that the fest is organized in an excellent manner but controlling traffic had become a big issue.

What nonsense street food..Every third stall was potato twister stall....Atleast more charmuri stalls would have been more beneficial as deep fried potatos in any shape, or form is total junk food.

Food Festival, I thought street food vendors from all over India will come and give different types of their place. But here all local hoteliers, catering agencies, have opened their outlets on the footpath. Nothing special. This could have done at any school grounds or at Nehru maidan. Administration should have avoided this in thickly residential areas. This is a lesson to administration not to repeat this mistake again. I support Food Festival in Mangalore, but in decent ways.

Such kind of festivals should be recognised, but not with the core of blocking the traffic and dumping the garbage after the festival. Has it been planned a bit well, and organised on karavali grounds, which could have been dedicately been a festival under one area and clearing of the garbage would also have been easy. Our MCC needs to plan better ways to organise such events and festivals, which can give added economy and earnings to the vendors.

Most of the food items were served in the BANNED PLASTIC items. This ban is just to make money for the officials. The elected representatives inaugurated the event and they failed to take action

Hi it was a good event, only some advance planning was required. Yes traffic issues were there, but what about during dusserra festival. No complaints nor issues were reported. Ok first time some hik ups will happen I believe it was a sucess.

Dasara procession is just one day, not continuous 5 days, also, no stalls put up all the way from mangala stadium to Mannagudda, you can't compare the 2.,just over a weekend a 2d fest would have been tolerable.

Was it a surprise? If people couldn't foresee traffic problems what dungheads are they? Police caused a traffic jam by allowing all vehicles going towards Ladyhill from Lalbagh like it was totally open for traffic and then save a sudden barricade near Hathill right turn, how pathetic they were! Waste of time, fuel ,money ,,people had to just make a U turn & go back to Lalbagh,

Why the city corporation has given permission to street food which is not at all hygienic. Secondly, why the city corporation has not arranged parkings, specially for this street food. What the traffic police are doing, Is it not a traffic rules violations. I wanted to move Udupi but it has taken an hour within a short duration of street food. Did not the city mayor noticed this chaos.
