Mumbai, June 25 (IANS) Demanding that the price hike in diesel, cooking gas and kerosene be rolled back, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Saturday held demonstrations at several places across Maharashtra, including this capital city.

The demonstrations were organised at all district headquarters across the state where large numbers of activists and general public expressed their strong opposition to the hikes announced by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) central government.

In Mumbai, the demonstrations were organised at several areas, including Nariman Point in south Mumbai, Dadar in central Mumbai, Andheri in northwest Mumbai and in the adjoining Thane city.

"Hundreds of people, along with party workers, demonstrated against the hike at various spots. They were carrying placards and shouted slogans to roll back the hike in prices of the essential fuels," a party official told IANS.

"This is absolutely uncalled for. The hike will slap a huge burden on the common man who is already fighting hard to make ends meet," he added.

The government Friday announced hikes in prices of diesel, LPG and kerosene. Diesel prices were increase by Rs.3 per litre, LPG would cost Rs.50 more per cylinder and kerosene prices have been increased by Rs.2 per litre.
