Mangaluru: Bus hits Irene D’Souza killing her on spot, driver escapes with vehicle

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Mar 30: As the memory of a boy, riding pillion with his mother, got killed by rash driving of city bus driver, is still fresh in the memory of city residents, one more accident has taken the life of a pedestrian woman at the same spot on Thursday March 30 afternoon.

Irene D’Souza (65), who arrived in a private bus from Saripalla to Mangaluru, alighted and was crossing the road, was hit by the same bus due to its driver’s negligence. The front wheel of the bus went over the woman and she died on the spot.

Shockingly, the bus driver escaped with the bus from the spot. The police tracked the bus through CCTV footage.

ACP traffic and other police have visited the spot. Argument also ensued between public and the police at the spot. The mortal remains of the deceased woman were shifted to Wenlock hospital with the help of the public.

Irene had retired after working as Sevantigudde Anganwadi assistant for some time. She had gone to attend mass at the Bikarnakatte church and was killed.

She was rolling beedies after her retirement. She was staying with her two sons, daughters-in-law and her grandchildren and used to go to the church every Thursday for a long time. Her neighbours used to accompany her but they did not go with her on Thursday. They recalled that late Irene wanted to prepare shell fish curry after returning home from the church. One of her sons is employed abroad.

The news says "shockingly the driver escaped with the vehicle". Its not the case, none of people in the bus knew the matter. Atleast until falnie the bus stopped every designated stops. No police chasing was known till then. So make the news correct. And make it unbiased. Cctv footage confirm she was crossing at the wrong time and at the wrong spot.

Very sad this happened and a life is lost, don't think the bus driver is at fault. It is very easy to blame the bus driver and find fault with him, but the lady should have crossed the road after the bus passed and the traffic was clear. The concerned authorities should not allow busses to stop at that location!

Having looked at the incident CCTV footage, I think the driver here is at no fault. The bus had stopped at the designated stop point, the lady got down from the bus and started crossing very close to the front of the bus. The bus started moving and knocked the lady down in the process. There is no way the driver could've noticed the lady from his high seating position. I believe the fear of getting beaten by public, made him flee the scene. Further investigation by the concerned department shall give the clear verdict. May her departed soul rest in peace.

As per this report clearly written 'due to driver's negligence'. As you said in this flatform itself another report should be given to clear that bus driver's guilt concious

Saw the cctv footage. It wasn't the drivers fault. The lady after getting down from the bus went on to cross to the other side right in front of the bus, which is a blind spot. The driver couldn't have seen her even if he tried. If the driver had stopped the bus after he ran over her, he would have been beaten for no reason and the bus would be thrashed.

After alighting the bus the passengers should cross the road from behind the bus. In this case it seems like the driver unfortunately did not see her walking in front of the bus to cross.

Crossing front the front or the back of a bus is a grave mistake, hopefully people remember that you can lose your life forever to save a few minutes. Rip to her soul. For people suggesting government buses have no idea what government buses are in cities. Visit Bangalore or Mumbai and see for yourself.

Only solution to stop this is to act and stop "manuli" given to stations.... till that happens, police will never take corrective actions against buses for their lapses.

It's a shame on the traffic department where they are unable to control the bus drivers, absolutely no lane disciplines, the entire city is polluted with all kinds of musical horn. It's time the authority take a stringent action towards all who violate the traffic rules. Especially setting up proper speed limits in the city.

Another innocent life taken away by these psycho bus drivers!!! All these Private bus drivers and their conductor buddies behave like bullies on the road, having no fear of the law or lives of fellow motorists or pedestrians. In comparison, KSTRC bus drivers are far more disciplined. With an hopelessly ineffective traffic police, the only way these maniacs will discipline themselves is when the fear of getting thrashed by the public black & blue is instilled in their thick buffalo heads!!! But then these jokers are shown as heroes on Instagram and the public "likes" them. Shame on them and same on the bus owners too for encouraging such behaviour......you guys are complicit in these murders on the roads too. There is not one private bus that is driven with discipline on the roads, all the time you will find them bullying fellow motorists on the roads and in that process, someone loses his or her life on the roads .The only other way is to revoke the license of all private bus operators and replace the buses with KSTRC driven ones on all routes on war footing. But then who cares about the public, vote bank politics & haftas will make sure this never happens.

Very very sad news. May her soul rest in peace 🙏 May God comfort and strengthen her loved ones for her tragic loss in such a shocking way. Why can't the Traffic Signal be installed & stringent rules be implemented for violation. Has the driver no concious for being a murderer and escape in such a way. Hope more care and consideration given by the drivers & conductors to the senior citizen passenger s atleast. Hope the driver gets a severe well deserved punishment.

May the departed soul rest in peace. I have got the video of this accident. This lady got off from the bus last. Those who descended first crossed in front of the bus and gone. But, this lady was not aware may be that bus had already begun to move. She is short and she just passed in front of the bus almost touching her saree to the body of the bus and she was running. Definitely driver did not see her. If she had crossed two meters away from the bus, driver could have seen and this mishap could have been avoided. So, bus just kept moving without knowing what happened!! Many a times, commuters too cross carelessly and always in a hurry to cross. Cannot wait for two minutes after getting down and watch around.

Private city buses are over speeding for competing with each other to grab more passengers. Few KSRTC city buses available in city are doing good job in a timely and safe manner. Mangalore should Introduce more of these KSRTC city buses and phase out private buses.

arm mangalore ,thrashing the driver ,killed person will not come back. But Police should consequent let the driver try to control their driving and penalize them one who doesnt do this or cancel their driving licence. They simply drive without control whoever comes under the bus or not .Otherwise he wouldnt escape from spot.Heartfelt sympathy to the family. We dont know once you are out of the house whether you come back or not.Hard .very tragic.May her soul rest in peace. His driving licence must be cancelled.pay heavy fine to the family.Police should control the buses speed and stop them when exceeded.

So whats is next . Will you cancel is license ? Put him on blaclist The bus owner will give hafta to police /Minister & release the bus & the Guy will be out from bail. That's all. 100% no action will be taken. If the Bis driver has to fled from the spot the public should think there is someone to support him.
