New Delhi, Jun 28: With a major Cabinet reshuffle in the cards coupled with plans to become more media-savvy, the Manmohan Singh government may well be going in for an image makeover.
The Cabinet reshuffle is likely this weekend, and sources said Sonia Gandhi has already begun talks with UPA ministers and top officials over the matter. Going by reports, it seems that the reshuffle may be a major one. Home minister Chidambaram likely to be given the defense portfolio, and Jyotiraditya Scindia may get a better deal, sources said.
Several ministers like M S Gill and Murli Deora may be axed while new faces from UP may be inducted.
There are also reports that the UPA II may take steps to improve its PR and hold regular interactions with the media. Over the past seven years, Manmohan Singh has had only three addresses to the nation, which has earned him the tag of a 'silent PM'. The Prime Minister's reluctance to talk openly about issues of corruption, black money and so on has been criticised by all and sundry, and the goverment is keen to change the trend with plans to hold more interactive meetings with media professionals and the Prime Minister on a regular basis.
