Vatican Launches Own Internet News Portal

Rome, June 29 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Pope Benedict XVI has launched Vatican's new information website by writing a short Twitter message on an iPad.

"Dear Friends, I just launched News.va. Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI," the message, posted Tuesday, said.

The portal will put online information from the Vatican's Osservatore Romano newspaper, radio and television media outlets as part of Roman Catholic Church's fresh communication push.

The content will include articles and video clips on the activities of the Holy See and commentaries on the global events as seen by the Catholic Church, written in English and Italian.

Experts predict high popularity of the portal as the Catholic Church has about 1.1 billion followers around the world.
