Karcham, Jul 3 (IANS): A mega power transmission corridor being constructed by the Jaypee Group in this Himachal Pradesh town will be commissioned by the end of this month, a company's official said here Sunday.
"The construction of 400 kilovolt Wangtoo-Abdullapur (in Haryana) power corridor is in final stages and would be completed by end of July," D.P. Goyal, managing director of Jaypee Powergrid Ltd, a subsidiary of the Jaypee Group, said.
He said the 216-km-long transmission corridor has been set up with an outlay of Rs.1,000 crore by Jaypee Powergrid Ltd.
It is a 74:26 joint venture between Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd and central transmission utility Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (Powergrid).
The power corridor has a carrying capacity of about 3,000 MW and would serve the upcoming projects in government as well as in private sectors in the state.
"It will be used as a common corridor for all the hydropower projects," Goyal told IANS.
The Rs.20,000 crore Jaypee Group is also constructing India's largest hydropower project in the private sector here.
The Karcham Wangtoo Hydroelectric Project, located some 200 km from state capital Shimla, would be fully commissioned by mid-August.
Goyal said by Aug 15 all four turbines of 250 MW each of the 1,000 MW project would start generating electricity.
The turbines made by Germany-based Andritz Hydro Company have the potential to generate 1,200 MW of hydel power with each turbine having the capacity to generate maximum 306 MW power during peak season, he added.
The work on the Rs.6,903.37 crore Karcham Wangtoo Hydroelectric project began in April 2006 and would be commissioned three months ahead of schedule.
The company claims that the project, once fully operational, would annually generate 4,368 million units.
Around 80 percent of the power generated from the hydropower project is to be sold to Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The remaining is merchant power that would be sold in the open market, said a statement of the company.
The hill state is also entitled to get a royalty of 12 percent free power from the project for first 12 years and 18 percent subsequently.
The company's maiden project in Himachal Pradesh, the 300 MW Baspa Hydropower project, commenced commercial generation in 2003. It is located on the upstream of the company's upcoming project.
With the commissioning of the 1,000 MW Karcham Wangtoo Hydroelectric Project, Jaypee Group's total hydropower capacity will be 1,700 MW.
Its second operational project is the 400 MW Vishnuprayag project in Uttarakhand.
