Mamata Mulling Renaming West Bengal

Kolkata, July 6 (IANS) The West Bengal government is contemplating renaming the state and the view of all the stake holders will be taken into consideration before taking any decision, a minister said Wednesday.

"Since the name of the state starts with W, our representatives get to speak only at the fag end of any function when most of the audience has left. To do away with the problem, the chief minister (Mamata Banerjee) has suggested the name be changed," state Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee said at the state secretariat after a cabinet meeting.

Chatterjee said views of all stakeholders will be considered.

"It is a sensitive issue and any decision will be taken only after considering the views of the political parties, assembly members as well as experts from the field."

"A proposal was moved today in this regard during the cabinet meeting and the chief secretary (Samar Ghosh) has been entrusted to collect all the views and suggestions. It's both a sensitive and humanitarian issue so all suggestions will be given due consideration," added Chatterjee who is the spokesperson of the cabinet.
