Al Qaeda Chief Ayman al-Zawahri Hiding in Pakistan: Panetta

Kabul, Jul 9 (IANS): Ayman al-Zawahri, who was named the successor to slain Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, has been living in Pakistan's tribal areas, a media report said Saturday quoting US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta.

Panetta said he wanted to see Pakistan's action against the Al Qaeda chief, according to report on Pakistan's Geo TV.

The report said that he made the remarks prior to his visit to Afghanistan. It was strategically possible to defeat the Al Qaeda if the US could kill or capture some 20 remaining leaders of the core group and its affiliates, he said.

These individuals were hiding in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia, he added.
