Blood banks in Mangaluru city face shortage due to election season

Mangaluru, May 18: Hospitals in Mangaluru city are facing shortage of blood. The reduction in blood donation camps is also one of the reason for this shortage. It is also said that the legislative assembly elections in the state that have just got over more than a week back has reduced the number of blood donation camps.

Most of the hospitals in the city have their own blood bank. However, as the  number of blood donation camps have reduced all are facing shortage of blood. Private hospitals send the relatives of patients in need of blood to the blood bank in Wenlock Hospital.

Blood donation is the best donation a person can do. If a person is healthy and young he or she can donate blood. Medical officers have requested organisations, colleges and public to participate in blood donation camps and donate blood to those in need. They have also urged organisations to conduct more blood donation camps. Some have already begun responding to the appeal and are either organising camps or donating blood in person.

The biggest challenge is to collect as much blood as possible before the monsoon season begins. During monsoon there will be more infections and it will not be possible to collect blood. So the challenge now that the blood banks are facing is to collect more than the requisite quantity of blood which should be as much as possible before the monsoon season begins.

Those who wish to donate blood in Wenlock Hospital of Mangaluru may do so personally or through organisations. Those interested can donate blood on all days of the week between 9 am and 4.30 pm except on Sundays. On Sundays blood can be donated between 9 am and 1 pm. Donors can contact Sadashiv Shanubogue, DMO, Wenlock on 9845225529.
