Bantwal: Farmers accuse police of mishandling guns deposited during elections

Daijiworld Media Network – Bantwal (MS)

Bantwal, May 21: Gun owners have raised concerns about the inadequate safekeeping of their firearms by the police during election periods, citing technical issues and improper storage.

During elections, gun license holders are required by the government to deposit their guns at local police stations in order to maintain law and order. However, farmers and gun owners have accused the police of failing to properly secure the firearms, resulting in technical faults and damage.

While district collectors advise gun license holders to deposit their guns either at authorized gun dealers or local police stations, it has been observed that guns deposited with authorized dealers are handled more safely and securely, albeit at a fee of Rs 200.

On the other hand, guns deposited at police stations are often stored together in a gunny bag, leading to bending and potential damage. A farmer from the rural area of Bantwal provided this information.

Previously, gun owners were not charged for the safekeeping of their guns at police stations, but now a fee of Rs 200 is being imposed. Despite paying the fee, gun holders claim that the police are still failing to adequately safeguard their firearms.
