Mangaluru, May 21: In the early hours of Sunday, a tragic accident occurred on NH 66 at Ucchila, resulting in the death of an elderly woman and serious injuries to three others. The Omni van they were traveling in collided with the iron fencing by the side of the national highway.

The deceased has been identified as B Fatima (85) from Kunjathur, Manjeshwara. Fatima, along with her son Moosa (50) and grandson Mustafa (24), was returning from attending a relative's funeral in Mangaluru.

According to reports, Fatima was seated in the front passenger seat next to the driver, while her grandson Mustafa was behind the wheel. The accident is believed to have occurred due to driver fatigue.

A passing vehicle rider witnessed the accident and promptly informed the highway traffic police. Traffic department police constables Mahesh Acharya and Vittaldas rushed to the scene. They extricated Fatima's mutilated body, which had become trapped between the iron rods, and the injured trio was transported to Deralakatte Hospital in the police vehicle.
