Bhubaneswar, July 13 (IANS) Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi Wednesday said his party is in favour of industrialisation but that has to be done with proper rehabilitation of those getting displaced.
Interacting with the youth members of the party in Orissa's Jharsuguda town, about 370 km from here, the Gandhi scion said industrialisation was necessary for the country's development.
On the proposed $12 billion POSCO steel project in the state, he said: "POSCO is necessary, but the question is whether justice is being done to the people who are giving up their lands."
He said if justice is being done, his party is not against POSCO; but he will be against it, if there is injustice.
Rahul Gandhi, the son of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, is on a two-day trip to Orissa beginning Wednesday that will take him to several districts as he attempts to strengthen the party at the grassroots.
Earlier in the day, Gandhi arrived at Kotpad village in the tribal populated district of Koraput at about 9.45 a.m. in a helicopter from Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh, Deputy Inspector General of Police Soumendra Priyadarshi told IANS.
He interacted with a group of Youth Congress activists at the village and urged them to join politics if they want to contribute to the development of their region.
The Congress MP, who had last week marched through several villages in Uttar Pradesh, will address a public meeting in Bhubaneswar Thursday, a senior party leader said.
Gandhi had last visited the state in December. While party leaders in the state said the visit will boost the morale of Congress workers, the ruling Biju Janata Dal said it will have no impact.
