Tax on liquor to be hiked to amass fund for Congress guarantees?

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Jun 8: There is a possibility that the excise tax on liquor will be increased by 10 to 15% by the government soon as per excise department sources.

The liquor prices were increased in May 2020. Speaking on the subject, S Guruswamy, president of Federation of Wine merchants, said, “Discussions are on about increasing the liquor prices by 15%. But nothing is clear as of now. The government has not spoken anything on this subject with the association. Compared to other states, the price of liquor in Karnataka is way too high. If it is increased, it will have direct impact on the middle class people of the society.”

Beer prices are going to hit hard. There is a possibility that the price may increase by 10 to 20%. Liquor sellers’ association said that price of Budweiser beer will increase from Rs 198 to Rs 220, UB beer from Rs 125 to Rs 135, strong from Rs 130 to Rs 135 and Kingfisher from Rs 160 to Rs 170.

Lokesh Kallipalya, president of Bengaluru city liquor sellers’ association says, “If the price of liquor is increased, the middle class will get affected badly. The government is following the policy of giving guarantees by one hand and snatching more money from public from the other.”

Even in a big metro like Mumbai booze is much cheaper than in Karnataka; hence increasing the rates further may definitely decrease the overall sales; also in neighboring Goa, the rates are damn cheap than in Karnataka; so, one can expect large scale smuggling across the borders in connivance with the Abkari cops; it will be a win win situation for both at the cost of the exchequer! In fact, if they marginally increase the taxes, the sales would increase!!

Why they're hesitating to increase taxes heavily on luxury cars, IPhones, and such other items, which the rich use and these category of people are not bothered about the prices? Also certain professionals who do not issue receipts but execute all transactions in full ⚫?

Why only rich should be targeted, they are working hard & earning. Already paying heavy tax on their income as well as on their spends. Even though I don't drink alcoholic drinks, its unfair to target anyone section of the society. In Maharashtra imported liquor prices are in line with Goa price. already available at 50% of Karnataka price.

This is how excel sheet CEOs manage the company. At least they show profits. Here it is excel sheet communist in charge it looks like. 5 guarantees are only announced. They are yet to come into force, but price rise has kicked in (power tariff for June and now appetizers are expensive - more opportunities for smuggling). If you cheer you are progressive, but if you do not then you are andh bakt.

Only Gattada people foolishly voted for Congress with an anticipation of freebies. Most of the free money anyway coming back to treasury with interest by one way or another. Only ration and education can be given to free. India cant afford more than that. otherwise we end up with huge loan burden. The example of our neighbor Pakistan and Sri Lanka in front of us.

We can spend depending on our income. Same way, government can look after middle class people's needs by making rich class to spend more to substantiate the incurred loss or expenditures. 50% 0r more people spend half of salary or earnings on alcohol. They never regret spending on alcohol but when wife requests to spare some money, there are 10's of reasons. ( it's my opinion) Let us hope increased reveneu may help the the government to bring down the fuel prices in a near future!

One major difference I have noticed with the mindsets of Cong and BJP supporters is that cong supporters do support for anything and everything their party leaders do but BJP people oppose a lot when their party leaders err in their decisions. For eg. BJP's own workers stood against their state president during election time due to his wrong decisions. But congress workers have never done so when congress didn't give any important portfolios to Lingayat community. Also though all know that free offers by the government is going to hit us badly, none of our sensible supporters oppose it. I think we must introspect thoroughly in terms of long term perspective of the party. Soon we can see big trouble within the party.

all this hike is because centre is not giving funds to congress rule state . BJP have blocked all the funds for kanataka ...... so now state itself is funding & baring all the expneses ..... so till next year all this hike will be there, once in centre congress come next year then all the tax or hike will be less .... so people of karnataka little days adjust . we have survived 9 years till now so little more days & months ..... then congress will make less dont worry...................... so currently we can go goa and enjoy for a while and also it will be a good outing also ......

I support hike in Liquors items. Government must along with that on all luxury goods the price should increase, then only Government will get more revenue. There are nearly 75% people are poor and low income group. And only 10% rich in our state. By increasing price, more fund Government will get and they can improve the standard of poor.

Do you know the sales of very cheap booze, which is consumed by the poorest to snap their daily tensions? The rich will have no difference as they don't care, but the middle income class tipplers will be hit the most!! This will encourage smuggling from neighbouring states like Goa and Maharashtra!!
