Mangaluru: Authors should understand lives of humans, not write for fame - Jayant Kaikini

Mangaluru, Jun 11: "Writers should write to understand the lives of human beings which is surrounded by nature. Yashwanth Chittal did the same and he succeeded in understanding the minute things which are stuck with life. But nowadays, a majority of the writers are writing to become a writer. It is not healthy for the literary world," said Jayant Kaikini, distinguished Kannada writer and lyricist.

He was reminiscing stalwart Kannada writer late Yashwanth Chittal at a commemorative programme named ‘Chittala Chitta’ held at the World Konkani Centre (WKC), Shakti Nagar, Mangaluru.

"I was a close follower of Yashwanth Chittal from my childhood days. He influenced me and my contemporary writers with his thoughts, discipline and his skill of writing. He connected his life to his literary works and tried to find his place in it. His knowledge grabbing thrust and humour made him one of the best literary persons in Kannada,"  he added.

Renowned journalist Vivek Shanbhag said literature offers valuable insights into Chittal's remarkable writings.

He said, "We can see the flavour of Uttara Kannada in Chittal's writings. The village 'Hanehalli' which comes from Chittal's novels is in itself an identification of his life and lives of his surroundings. He had a great talent for explaining the stories of common society with live narration."

Shanbhag also spoke on Chittal's style of writing and the usage of language and words.

This special occasion witnessed the unveiling of Chittal's portrait at the esteemed World Konkani Hall of Fame, adding to his well-deserved recognition and honouring his literary contributions.

Nandagopal Shenoy, president of the World Konkani Centre presided over the programme.

The celebrated Kannada writer, whose mother tongue was Konkani, lived most part of his life in the cosmopolitan and corporate Mumbai. But he celebrated Kannada all through his life. He is well known for his short stories as well as novels which have earned him Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award, Sahitya Academy Award, Vardhamana Award and Adikavi Pampa Award among others.

The World Konkani Hall of Fame is the embodiment of the Konkani spirit. It is the place where nobel sons and daughters of mother Konkani shine through their portraits. And the collective energy encapsulated in this hall inspires the generations of Konkani speaking people.

Guru Baliga, CEO, World Konkani Centre rendered the vote of thanks. Shakunthala R Kini compered the event.
