Free travel – KSRTC buses overloaded with women passengers in Mangaluru, Udupi

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru/Udupi (MS)

Mangaluru/Udupi, Jun 13: Women passengers rushed to board KSRTC buses in twin districts in the wake of Shakti free bus travel scheme for women that was flagged off on Sunday.

NURM buses that move from city to outskirt areas were filled with girl students and employed women in the morning as well as evening.

Most of the KSRTC buses that go from Statebank to Puttur were full by the time they reached Amedkar Circle at Jyoti cinema theatre in the evening.

In Udupi too, many women were seen waiting for buses as they could not board them at Moodbidri, Karkala and Kundapur areas. In Udupi depot, 940 women travelled free of cost from Sunday afternoon to 10 pm.

Women, who usually used to travel by private buses, have begun to travel by KSRTC buses. From Tuesday more passengers are expected. Private buses are incurring heavy losses due to the free scheme.

Police and home guard personnel are deployed in all bus stands to avoid any kind of untoward incidents in the wake of the free travel scheme for women.

On Sunday, in total 5454 women travelled for free in KSRTC Mangaluru division. The value of tickets of their travel is Rs 190155. In Puttur division, from Sunday afternoon to night, 6240 women took the benefit of free bus travel. The value of the tickets given free was Rs 2.18 lac.

Eva Kirem,💃 Something is better than nothing. accept whole heartily what the congress government is offering. Government is not responsible to cater to all the peoples all needs. People should realize that small family o2 are a happy family. with your grievances, rather complaining logic I remember a saying which goes: "ಬೆರಳು ಕೊಟ್ಟರೆ ಇಡೀ ಕೈ ತಿನ್ಲಿಕ್ಕೆ ನೋಡುವುದು" 🙏

@Flavia....sitting in kuwait drawing handsome salary (statement) one may not understand whats happening in india and in Mangalore. Already these girls/women are out of control. Society is not balanced in terms of living conditions. See in Bangalore young group is under pressure hence so many incidences. No girls are freely available for marriage alliances, meaning girls r very choosy. To look after elderly no paid assistance available. Balancing society is very important.

Now a million dollar question is " who will make good for the loss that is occurred by KSRTC for this free travel? " In a day if loss is around lacs of rupees in smaller cities like Mangalore / Udupi, what will it be, in other major cities like Bengalore etc? Nothing is free anyways. Loss will be made good through some new increased tariffs & taxes. Like free electricity has already resulted in BESCOM increasing the Electricity tariff for us who pay taxes. So, like the saying goes " THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A FREE DINNER " let us be prepared for hikes in essential areas to make up for the loss.!! By the way I am not a supporter of any political parties. I am just analyzing the situation and results.

If you raise your voice you will be called a Bakth and insulted. Our family of 4 relies on Auto Rikshaw income. Ladies form a major chunk of the customer base for auto's. Due to free bus, now the sector is worst hit. Yesterday we had only 10 customers ,that too from malls. It wont even pay for the petrol. There will be protest soon. The gaurantees have dire consequences as well.

Heavens won't fall if the scheme continues ... Women are happy and leading to a lot of savings for themselves and their families. Saw a comment from a rickshaw driver of lack of passengers...well regularly facing the brunt of their arrogance I'm happy that they are learning the hard way , service with a smile should be their motto... finally if you are the same person from the chamber of commerce, kindly educate all how much the state gets in return from its IT and GST collection..it's about 23 Rs.bfor Rs 100...what's the backlog ? ??? Collection last year was 272000 crores what did we recieve....We are a welfare state and our taxes should be used for the welfare of the people.

I’m too not a supporter of any party. But this freebie will cost dearly to the state, prompting women to take undue advantage of the service. Instead the govt. should have contemplated on issuing discounted tickets and monthly passes to working women and all students (boys and girls).

I just don't understand free busfare to ladies only! Aren't you puttibg more pressure on husbands and sons!? I am a feminist but here i go for equality. Instead brung down cost of petrol and busfare, autofare and taxifare. Average salary in mangalore 12-15000. How can a family of five can live in that salary? How r they paying school fees? How are they making a shelter of their own. Poor is some living lavishly with free rice and Ayushman but how about middleclass? No rice no Ayushman.
