Udupi, Jun 17: SP Hakay Akshay Machhindra informed media that an anti-drug committee will be formed in Udupi to curb the consumption of narcotic drugs among the student community.

Speaking in a press meet held on Saturday June 17, SP Machhindra said, "The committee will pay visit to all schools and colleges in Udupi and will spread awareness about the ill effects due to consumption of narcotic drugs. It is not something that can be consumed for amusement. Consumption of drug will cause serious psychological disorders, and it will severely affect a person’s health, education and behaviour. This will lead to finding illegal ways to earn money to buy drugs. The CEN police and other police departments will visit all colleges and will check if any student is consuming drugs knowingly or unknowingly. Many students and parents have sent anonymous text messages or letters to me regarding consumption of drugs by their children or friends. I appreciate them for taking such steps to save them. I wish all to take such steps so that we can curb consumption of drugs.”

He further said, "Two drug peddlers were arrested by Udupi police for peddling MDMA drug. Both are law students studying in a prestigious law college in Udupi. Both are highly qualified and belong to prestigious families. We will visit their college, talk to the management committee and students. An electronic weighing machine and plastic pouches were found in the peddlers’ pocket. MDMA is a type of drug mostly consumed by students and high profile people.”

He also informed that recently they have raided more than 15 parties and caught students consuming drugs. The home minister has ordered to curb drug mafia in the district from its roots and hence the police are arresting drug consumers so that they can catch the suppliers, the SP said.

Speaking about cybercrime, the SP said, “Cases of cybercrimes are also increasing and most victims are highly qualified people. The scam of providing part time job is also increasing, where they ask money for different things. Now, the victims can file complaint in any police station in the ‘golden hour’, which is as soon as possible. The police in all police stations will be trained how to register the case related to cybercrimes. People do not come forward to file cases.” He also requested the public not to download unauthorised applications.

Doctor. Please try to understand the difference between MDMA and cannabis. The former works mostly on serotonin latter on dopamine/noradrenaline. MDMA is a synthetic drug and cause violent behaviour. Cannabis works opposite.
