Kundapur: Mescom meter reader commits gaffe by billing shop for Rs 1 crore, rectifies anomaly

Daijiworld Media Network – Kundapur (SS)

Kundapur, Jun 21: A shop here has received an electric bill for Rs 1 crore from the power distribution company.

Sri Sai Centre, a shop here has run up a bill of more than Rs 1 crore which has consumed 1,574 units of electricity. But, in the bill the consumption reads 13,11,155 units for which the distribution company has billed the shop for Rs 91,28,085 and added Rs 8,26,027 as taxes, Rs 1,70,450 as fuel adjustment charges totalling Rs 1,01,75,893 as the total bill amount.

The meter reader pressed an additional zero while billing thus adding to this hullabaloo. Even though this was brought to the notice of the reader, he has no authority or it is rather not possible to withdraw the bill that has been generated. Later, the issue escalated to the Mescom officials who rectified the anomaly and gave the shop another bill.

Similarly, Belagavi University was billed Rs 35 lac instead of the regular Rs 18 lac and a resident of Ullalbail was billed for Rs 7.71 lac who was normally billed for Rs 3,000. Another shop in Kundapur got a bill for Rs 1,000 after consuming 2 units.

Matlab kuch bhi! First of all nothing is free because everyone in this country pays taxes and hence whatever the government gives back to the taxpayer through such schemes is people's right and not anyone's generosity. Income tax makes up for just about 5% of government's total revenue while the remaining revenue is garnered to indirect taxes which every citizen pays. So please cut this crap that you are the only 'taxpayer and that your money is used to dole out these schemes. No one bothers when loans amounting to millions and billions of the corporate are written-off, when government gives them free land, subsidised power and so on. But when a small amount is spent on the poor, the middle-class gets jittery because we want the poor to be poor and be our slaves forever. Secondly the current news is about faulty bill issued due to meter reader's mistake and it has been rectified too. What connection it has with government's schemes? And those whose power bills for the month of May have shot-up sharply should hold the previous govt responsible because it was they who had approved the hike recommendations of Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) and the new rates with retrospective effect came into practice from May 12, 2023, one day before the election results came out. KERC is an independent body and govt has no rights to overturn its decisions once they are implemented. The only way they could be overturned is when they approach govt for the hike. But previous govt approved the hike on April 12, 2023 and the present govt cannot do anything with this now. The only way forward would be to get into a legal battle with KERC in the Courts of Law.
