Kasargod: Parents to move court against naming Malayali teacher to teach Kannada students

Daijiworld Media Network – Kasargod (SS)

Kasargod, Jun 21: Kannada medium students and their parents of Adoor Government Higher Secondary School are up in arms against the government of Kerala for naming a Malayali teacher to teach Social Sciences without any knowledge of Kannada language. They have decided to move the court against this government appointment.

It is mandated by law that every child between the ages 6 years to 14 years has the right to be educated in his/her mother tongue. But, the education department of the government of Kerala has taken away this lawful right of providing for education in the mother tongue. Children who speak Kannada should be taught in the Kannada medium of instruction, the parents contend. The newly appointed teacher is not adept in reading and writing Kannada language properly and the students have complained about their lack of understanding when the teacher teaches them.

The newly appointed teacher is unable to teach SSLC students in Kannada who are at an important juncture of their academic career and it is the duty of the government to fulfill that need, parents say.

Parents are demanding appointment of a teacher who is proficient in Kannada and whose mother tongue is Kannada to teach their wards.

Parents said they have withdrawn their agitation temporarily and classes were conducted as per routine on Tuesday.

Is Kasargod in Karnataka where the medium of instruction is Kannada, or in Kerala? If Kerala, how come Kannada has become the medium of instruction and not malayalam? Has the Centre got any say in this? There are so many corresponding issues in teaching where parents could demand English to be taught by an English scholar and Hindi by a Hindi scholar and not by teachers learned in other languages.....
