Uttar Pradesh Heads for Short, Dry Spell

Lucknow, Jul 23 (IANS): After widespread rains that led to the swelling of major rivers, most parts of Uttar Pradesh are now in for a dry spell from Saturday, a weather official said.

"Rainfall activity will slow down from today (Saturday) as the cyclonic circulation, which is responsible for the rains, has weakened. It will gradually fizzle out, leading to a dry spell," state Met Director J.P. Gupta told reporters.

The dry spell would continue at least for three days "till another circulation or low pressure area develops over the state", said Gupta.

Moderate to heavy rains had left several rivers, including Ghagra, Sharda and Saryu in spate. In various districts of Uttar Pradesh, the authorities had sounded an alert.

Lucknow's minimum temperature Saturday was recorded at 25 degrees Celsius -- one degree below average.
