Udupi, Jul 23: A failed burglary attempt took place at Uppoor Agricultural Service Co-operative Bank, near here, on Thursday July 21.

The burglars dug up an opening on the rear wall of Uppoor Agricultural Service Co-operative Bank late night on Thursday and got inside the premises.  They were in the process of breaking open the strong room when the siren blared. Although, the burglars had smashed a siren earlier, it was another siren that went off.  Alarmed by the siren, the burglars fled from the scene.

It is believed that a group of about 4 – 5 people were involved in this burglary attempt. The burglars abandoned the tools that were used to dig an opening in the wall. The burglary attempt came to light only when the newspaper vendors arrived at the spot due to the blaring siren at 4.00 am on Friday July 22.  Cash amounting to Rs 3 lac and gold ornaments worth Rs 10 lac were intact in the safe lockers.

Brahmavar circle inspector G Krishnamurti and Brahmavar police sub-inspector Hosakerappa arrived at the crime scene along with a canine squad and fingerprint experts.

The bank manager said that new building of Uppoor Agricultural Service Co-operative Bank will be equipped with CCTV and all safety systems.
