Mangaluru - Dubai over Rs 50 k one way airfare dampens the spirits of coastal residents

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jun 25: The sudden increase in airfare from Dubai to Mangaluru has posed a significant challenge for middle-class families residing in the Gulf nation. coastal residents

With summer holidays underway in Dubai and Bakrid festival approaching, many natives of coastal districts who live in Dubai plan to visit their hometown during this time of the year. However, the exorbitant airfare has forced numerous families to reconsider their travel plans.

As of June 25, the one-way ticket price on Air India Express was Rs 53,887 for June 26, it was Rs 50,471. In IndiGo, the prices stood at Rs 50,582 and Rs 52,000, respectively. For a family of four, the cost of tickets alone would amount to Rs 2 lakhs.

However, the ticket prices from Mangaluru to Dubai are relatively low, with tickets available for as low as Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000. The ticket prices from Kozhikode and Mumbai to Dubai are even lower.

Currently, Air India Express and IndiGo are the only airlines offering direct flights from Mangaluru to Dubai. During the summer holidays in Dubai, tickets are in high demand, especially for families with children and elderly members who prefer direct flights.

Previously, SpiceJet from Mangaluru, GoAir from Kannur, and Go First from Kannur offered tickets at lower prices. Some passengers would purchase tickets at special fares and group discounts, selling them to travel agents at a lower commission. This allowed passengers to fly from Mangaluru at a discounted rate, saving Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000.

Zakir Iqlas, a travel agent, commented, "During the summer holidays in Dubai, ticket prices tend to rise. However, this year the prices are exceptionally high due to the limited number of flights operating between Mangaluru and Dubai. Prices are comparatively lower when flying via Mumbai or Kannur, but the journey becomes more tedious. Rates tend to decrease in September and October, only to increase again during Christmas and New Year."

Kayinath Aara, a housewife residing in Dubai, expressed her frustration, stating, "Currently, the ticket prices exceed Rs 50,000 per person. It would cost us Rs 2 lacs solely for travel expenses. Despite having holidays and the Bakrid festival, we are unable to fly to Mangaluru. Consequently, we have had to postpone our trip."

If weekly thrice Air Arabia and Fly Dubai are allowed to fly too Mangalore, its going to be a big relief. Unfortunately MP / MLA's of undivided DK are not interested in development of the region. With communal / cow / hijab they can win easily! We commoners keep crying foul and paying through the nose. They can not find a permanent solution to Charmadi Road and some attention to Mlore - Blore train too!

In the month of April 2023 I purchased air ticket for my family costing 60,000-Rs per ticket . This is purely Airlines companies mafia taking advantage and looting middle class people money . Central government intervene is imminent . Here Hon'ble MP Mr.Nalin kumar kateel will need to play his real role by seriously reviewing this issue , escalate this subject to union aviation minister to get additional flights or restrict the hike of airfare to decent amount .

You have done a mistake by calling Nalin as honorable...why do you call honourable ...its known fact that he has done noting for DK and he will not resolve this issue too...This same soft corner has made him and other politicians very lenient and unbothered.

John Tauro mangalore ,but with it your problems are not solved. What do you think for the extra luggage you have charges in mangalore or Bangalore ?They are not allowing more than 15kg .Have to pay lot for extra.Suppose you come from International airport ,then you can carry .IN Air India 2 suite case each 23kg.Otherwise Bangalore to Mangalore or vice versa only 15kg.For us a big problem to reach Mangalore.

@ Rita, Germany, once upon a time flights from Europe used to allow not more than 20 kg. Either carry limited luggage or (if you are healthy and young enough) continue inland journey by bus or train. From B’lore Airport there are direct buses to M’lore and also local train from airport to the main city station from where you can board train to Mangalore. Online reservation can be done from any part of the world.

They don't care for the welfare of the people. If tax payers money is used for the welfare of the people then India would be a heaven on earth.

Nothing special. During peak seasons airlines generally raise the ticket money and civil aviation ministry has no control over it. For us from Saudi always we need to shed Rs. 48,000.00 from Riyadh to Mangalore and back as there is no direct flight to Mangalore from Riyadh and we need to depend mostly on Indigo which flies to Mangalore via Delhi or Mumbai.

Air India express is having a monopoly attitude and our DGCA is not even allowing other international airlines to land at Mangalore. Airlines like air arabia, fly dubai, Salam air, Oman air have been trying their luck since from years together, but still there seems to be no relief given nor landing rights. Mangalore can grown even more, when many foreign airlines start landing, it generates revenue to the district as well, but our govt is blind and deaf, and only want to support air india express, which is just looting people with their monoploy attitude.
