Nishad Party renews demand for SC reservation

Lucknow, Jun 27 (IANS): The Nishad Party will start a state-wide campaign, called 'Aarakshan Mahasampark Abhiyan', from Wednesday to reach out to people from Nishad (fishermen) community and garner their opinion on SC reservations for sub-castes of the community in the state.

The party will prepare a report based on the public opinion and hand it over to its alliance partner BJP.

The campaign will start from Purvanchal where Nishads are present in significant numbers.

Nishad Party president Sanjay Nishad said that the party is committed to the cause of SC reservation for Nishad subcastes.

“It was the reason why the party came into existence,” he said.

The demand for SC reservations for subcastes of Nishads has not been met by the BJP government till now.

It has been promised twice, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

According to the Nishad Party chief, ‘majhwar’ is mentioned in the state government’s list of SCs but the people belonging to the caste, use different sub-castes in different regions of the state because of which they are not being issued the SC certificate.

On December 20, 2021, the state government wrote to the registrar general of India and Census commissioner of India seeking guidance in the matter.

But things have not moved beyond that.
