Udupi, Jun 28: The Counseling cell of Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management, Bantakal organized an invited talk on 'Parenting of Adolescents' by Dr P V Bhandary, director, Dr A V Baliga Group of Institutions Udupi at college premises held recently.

Dr Bhandary addressed the parents and students on various teenage problems. In his speech, he mentioned that, as the child grows the parents need to change their skills of handling them by understanding their basic needs, and keep guiding them to show appropriate behavior in the society. Parents should know when to help and when to back off.

He explained about various teenage problems mobile addiction, alcoholism, substance abuse, peer pressure, opposite sex attraction. Students when they face severe problems, they neglect studies and lose their track in the academic career. He advised the parents to seek the help of mental health professional if necessary to handle their children. He also mentioned about the depression issue seen in teenagers.

He told that students will be having pressure to perform, pressure to confirm and pressure to reform. Parents should understand the student’s problem and not to compare with their level children which leads to develop inferiority complex, stress and depression in them. In teenage, children will have both physical and mental changes. He concluded his speech by appealing parents to be aware of 4 M’s while providing to children and they are mobile, money, media, and motorbike.

Akshatha Rao, welcomed and introduced the resource person. Nagaraj Rao, in charge HOD of AI & ML organized the event and Shashikala coordinated the event.
