Bantwal, Jul 1: A couple tried to ends their lives at Bakila here near Kodaje, under Vittal police station limits on Saturday July 1 evening. Both of them were rushed to the hospital. The husband later died without responding to the treatment.

Pratap, a bus driver and his wife Veena, residents of Anantadi Bakila, were the ones who tried to end their lives. Police said that the doctors informed them that Pratap died without responding to the treatment.

The reason for the extreme step is yet to be ascertained. The couple has five-year-old twin children. The incident came to light when the children saw their parents trying to end their lives. They immediately informed the neighbours.

Both of them were admitted to the ICU at the private hospital in Puttur. It is said that Veena has been shifted to Mangaluru for further treatment.

Vittal police station inspector Nagaraj visited the spot. An investigation is underway.

Suicides are resorted by people who are not just desperate but have no dignity of life; to them there is nirvana in the next world. They lack proper moral and spiritual support to inculcate value of life on earth.

People should be enlightened about the ill effects of suicide in all levels. My thinking is that it should be taught at the high school itself.

Rather, they should be taught different life skills like how to come with failure, regular communication of bothering issues with some close friends; but in cases of severe untreated depression suicidal ideation is very common!

Very unfortunate incident; looks like it has happened in a spur of the moment! Just an advice, never allow a third party, especially inlaws or sisters to interfere in the day to day affairs/bickerings or decision making process, of a happily married couple or your bond will be at high risk of breakage!

Rudolf R.Mumbai.I dont think third Party is involved here.Still as parents of small twins feel responsibility towards their children and stay back from all this suicide. How many times we too feel like go and jump in river or in fire?OR drinking something else.We should thank God for what he has given us ,and feel simply responsible the work we have here.To care and help others right?I am sure they must have had big money problems ?Still they should have spoken to some one and seek some answer,Have two children .Now hope mother will survive and ask reason for their action. And may RECOVER FAST and look after them.Sad husband died .What a shock to children to see what they did?May not forget in their life time.Pity mostly children for loosing their father in young age and mother is struggling.

Karen Dsouza, Udupi/ You are 100% right dear Karen. Coastal people behave in lethargic manner as if they rule the roost - just like metropolitan natives. They have become such lousy piece of s**t and won't support each other during times of crisis, will refuse to see face to face even when it comes to their own neighbours. It was never like this a couple of years ago. Whether this "behaviour" was inculcated a few years ago or after the covid induced pandemic is unknown.
