Pakistan Prepares to Auction 3G Licences


Islamabad, Jul 27 (IANS): Pakistan may invite international telecom firms alongwith the national operators to participate in an open auction for 3G licences which is expected to yield Rs.60 billion in the current fiscal, a media report said Wednesday.

Sources told Daily Times that Finance minister Hafeez Shaikh held a meeting on the auction of 3G licences and its recommendations would be submitted to the cabinet.

The cabinet would be asked to approve the modalities of the auction of the 3G licences.

The meeting was told that Mobilink, Ufone, Telenor, Warid and Zong are five potential firms for taking part in the bidding for 3G licences.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) would oversee the auction process.
