Rains Lash Parts of Delhi, More Showers Likely


New Delhi, Jul 27 (IANS): A day after Delhi recorded its wettest day of the season, heavy showers lashed the capital once again Wednesday -- bringing down temperature and causing traffic congestion.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), some parts of the city received heavy rains, but the overall rainfall rom 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. was was 0.3 mm.

"The showers lashed major parts of north, west and central Delhi and some parts of south Delhi. A major portion of south Delhi had overcast skies but received no showers except for some drizzle," said an IMD official.

According to the Delhi Traffic Police, traffic jams were reported at New Friends Colony and Mehrauli in south Delhi and at Azadpur in north Delhi.

"I had to wade through knee-deep water to visit the neighbourhood market," said Vikas Pahwa, a media student from north Delhi's Model Town.

Meanwhile, the city also received overnight showers.

Around 58 mm of rainfall was recorded from 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, the official said.

According to the Met Office, Delhiites are likely to witness more rains towards the evening as the skies will remain overcast.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 25.6 degrees Celsius, a notch below average for this time of the season, while the maximum is expected to hover around 33 degrees Celsius.

Delhi has received a total of 192.2 mm rainfall till now, 23 percent less than what it normally receives during monsoon.
