Udupi, Jul 10: Vanamahotsav was celebrated in 51 units of the Catholic Sabha Udupi diocese on Sunday, July 9. Santhosh Cornelio, president of Catholic Sabha Udupi Pradesh, inaugurated the Vanmahotsav programme by planting saplings in the Mother of Sorrow church, Udupi premises.
Santhosh Cornelio, president of Catholic Sabha Udupi Pradesh, on the occasion, said, “Everyone should take special care to protect the environment by planting saplings and nurturing them. The world can be safe only with the environment. The environment should be clean for the rain, crops, and health to be healthy. The environment must go green. Every citizen should also be an environmental lover and work hard to protect the trees and build a clean society. Growing a thousand saplings is the main aim of celebrating vanmahotsav. Everyone must be aware of protecting the environment. Due to increase in use of vehicles, deforestation, inadequate use of plastic resulted in air pollution and global warming, and decrease in growth of crops. There is a need for everyone to introspect about environment”.
Saplings were distributed in 51 units of Catholic sabha, and were instructed to plant at home with their family members and take care of them. After registering the families who have planted more than 10 plants this year, every three months, the office bearer of the unit will submit the report of the plant nutrition to the central committee and the central committee will give a reward to those who have honestly nurtured the plant. Vanamahotsava celebration was held in all the units of the diocese and 3327 saplings were planted.
Msgr Fr Ferdinand Gonsalves, Catholic Sabha Udupi Region spiritual director, Alphonse D Costa, former presidents Alwyn Quadros, Valerian Fernandes, Robert Menezes, Ronald D'Almeda, designated president, Leslie Cornelio, co-treasurer, Gerald Rodriguez, treasurer, member Loisette Cornelio were present.
