Nurse Held for Reporting False Pregnancies, Deliveries

Udaipur, Jul 27 (IANS): Days after a scam was reported in a health centre in this Rajasthan district, a nurse has been arrested for recording false delivery details to swindle money meant for Below Poverty Line (BPL) pregnant women, police said Wednesday.

The nurse, in connivance with the pregnancy ward's head of Gogunda Community Health Centre in Kotda town, provided false delivery details to obtain government aid under the centrally sponsored scheme -- the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY).

To swindle the funds, the centre staff doctored records showing at least 32 deliveries by men and many others by, several of them over 60 years old.

"The district administration authorities Tuesday registered a complaint against the health centre employees, including its pregnancy ward's head Rekha Bhati. We arrested Sita Devi, who fraudulently got Rs.200 on each delivery," a police officer told IANS.

He added that Rekha is missing and on the run.

The pregnancy ward's head has made entries of 250 deliveries in one year, said a health department officer.

Records claim that a 60-year-old woman delivered babies twice within a year. Another woman named Sita is shown to have delivered 24 babies in a year.

The pregnancy ward's head has herself claimed to have delivered 11 babies in a year, the officer said.

"She had been removed immediately after the scam came to light, but now she is missing," the official said.

The JSY aims to reduce the number of maternal and neonatal deaths among pregnant women from BPL families, above 19 years of age and up to two live births. It integrates help in the form of cash with antenatal care during the pregnancy period, institutional care during delivery as well as immediately after delivery.

Under the scheme, Rs.1,700 is given to the woman on child delivery while the midwife gets about Rs.200.
