'Liquor in tetra packs will attract children': AIADMK leader Jayakumar

Chennai, Jul 15 (IANS): AIADMK senior leader D. Jayakumar on Saturday said that selling alcohol in tetra packets would attract children as "they would assume it to be fruit juice and consume it which in turn will make them alcoholic."

He was responding to the recent statement of Tamil Nadu Excise Minister Muthuswamy that Tasmac was contemplating to sell alcohol in tetra packs of 90 ml.

Jayakumar, the former Fisheries Minister, said, "Serving alcohol in tetra packs will attract children and make them alcoholics at a young age."

"Children would assume that the alcohol tetra pack was fruit juice and consume it making them turn alcoholics at a tender age," he said.

The AIADMK leader also came out strongly against the suggestion of Muthusamy that the department was considering opening Tasmac shops at 7 a.m.

The former minister asked, "If people would drink before going to work, will they be able to perform, or reach their workplaces safely."

After Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) took full control of the AIADMK, the party is taking on the DMK government on various issues.

I do not agree with this stupid statement. Tetra packs are not available in cold stores. Those who drink tetra packs are not capable of storing them at homes. Even if a young child comes in contact with tetra pack it will not like it for the first sip itself.
