Udupi district administration raids shops selling banned plastic, imposes fine

Udupi, Jul 15: The district administration conducted raids on shops selling banned plastic at various places in the district. The officers seized 107.81 kg plastic and collected a fine of Rs 47,500 from June 26 till July 15.

As much as 41.87 kg of plastic was seized and Rs 24,000 fine was imposed at Malpe. 29.44 kg of plastic was confiscated and Rs 10,500 fine was imposed at Parkala on June 28. Raids were conducted on July 15 on shops selling banned plastic near Sri Krishna Math. As much as 36.5 kg plastic was seized and Rs 12,500 fine was imposed.

The environmental engineer of the municipal council, senior health officer, junior health officer, sanitary supervisor and civic workers took part in the operation.

Municipal commissioner has warned that the trade licences of business concerns will be cancelled and a fine will be imposed on them if they are found using banned plastic.

    The solution is biodegradable, compostable plastic bags. Mere raiding shop is not sufficient, government need to provide the alternative. Can government invest in manufacturing of these bags???

    The elite class should find a solution to this problem. How can we buy fish without plastic bags? Raiding shops of the poor people will only damper the situation.

    Why not Government is not taking action against manufacturing companies??? Why simply harassing poor footpath vendors???. Fed up with this drama once in a year .

    The Udupi Municipal raids are good to regulate the illiterate businesses. However, it would be more advisable if alternatives are proposed and suggested like selling paper bags for a small price like Walmart sells each large paper bag with a handle and their logo for 8cents. Otherwise, people should bring their own cloth bags or hand them over their vegetables in their hands! The Administration should instead raid the traders and wholesalers of these plastic bags some of whom are located near and opposite the Udupi Head Post office. The Administration should work for the people as that's the reason why the citizens need an Administration and that's why these Municipal employees are getting paid for and not to boss over the poor. Don't punish the poor instead punish the business traders of disposables.
