Udupi: Traditional country boats resume fishing activity after a lull

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Jul 16: Traditional fishing boats were anchored for the last 10 days due to incessant rainfall and violent sea. However, they began to venture into the sea from Thursday and have got a good catch of small mackerels, prawns and sardine fishes.

A fish basket of small mackerel weighing 25 to 30 kilos is sold for Rs 2500 to 3000. Prawns are sold at Rs 150 to 170 per kilos while Sardines are sold at Rs 80 a kilo.

Traditional fishing boats could not get down to the sea this year due to delay in monsoon and inclement weather in the month of June. Later mass prayers were offered by Malpe traditional fishermen’s association.

Though small catch of fish was caught on July 8, during the next three to four days the fishermen had to return emptyhanded. Now fishing activity has picked up pace and traditional boat fishermen are happy with the catch.

As the mechanised boat fishing will begin from August 1, the traditional boats will stop fishing on July 31. Most of the people who work on traditional boats work in purseine boats as well. So they are trying to make the most.
