Locals Clash with Police After Minor's Killing

Lucknow, Jul 29 (IANS): A Class 2 student was mowed down by a bus in Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh district Friday, sparking violence and tension as protestors clashed with the police and blocked a highway, officials said.

Six-year-old Ravi Kumar died after a speeding state road transport corporation bus ran over him in Gambhirganj town, around 300 km from Lucknow, while he was on way to school. The driver escaped.

Demanding the arrest of the driver, protesters tried to set the bus and other vehicles afire, and blocked the Varanasi-Gorakhpur Highway.

"We managed to disperse the mob with the help of additional police force," said police inspector Jainand Bharti. "The situation is still tense, but under control."
