Mangaluru: Villagers oppose dumping of wastes by GP at Manjalpade quarry

Mangaluru, Jul 19: The locals of Padushedde are furious over dumping heaps of wastes at Manjalpade by Moodushedde grama panchayat in the water accumulated at the quarry.

Locals gathered in large numbers and questioned the act of Moodushedde grama panchayath. Tonnes of wastes have been dumped in the water accumulated at quarry turning it into a waste bed. The quarry being in an elevated area allows the accumulated waste water to flow into Padushedde village thus contaminating the well, fields and agricultural land.

Manjalpade which comes under the Moodushedde grama panchayat is in the news for wrong reasons and especially for dumping wastes on the roadside and creating nuisance. The grama panchayat has installed CCTVs after it received several complaints against dumping of wastes on the roadside.

 

Now Moodushedde grama panchayat has dumped the wastes on the quarry but due to heavy rains, water that had got accumulated in the quarry has flown down into the Padushedde village.

The locals of Padushedde have raised concerns over dumping of wastes on the quarry which led to contamination of well water and agricultural lands that has resulted in foul smell emanating from there.

Officials of the panchayat and health deoartment are already conducting a awareness campaign on health hazards such as malaria and dengue cause by the dumping of wastes and the flow of waste water into the village.

Panchayat development officers and panchayat president have visited the spot and assured the villagers of taking action immediately. Panchayat development officer said that government had sanctioned one acre of land for setting up a waste segregation unit at Moodushedde but due to the opposition from the locals a court had stayed its construction.

    Good job done by villagers. A big salute to them. Shame on the people who throw garbage in the quarry. Uneducated people maybe, they don't know how much harm they do for the nature. In India each state should take strict punishment.
