No question of holding elections under a caretaker government: Bangladesh minister

Kolkata, Jul 27 (IANS): Bangladesh incharge Minister of Information and Broadcasting Muhammad Hasan Mahmud on Thursday said that there is no question of holding the general elections in Bangladesh under a caretaker government.

“As usual the general elections will be conducted under the supervision of the Election Commission of Bangladesh,” Mahmud said while answering to the queries of the media persons on the apprehensions expressed by the Bangladesh’s principal opposition party Bangladesh Nationalist Party that general elections might be conducted under the supervision of a caretaker government.

Mahmud said that conducting general elections under the supervision of a caretaker government will be unconstitutional.

“How can something, which is not approved by the constitution of the country, be done? Everything will be done according to the norms laid down in the constitution,” he said.

He also indirectly referred to the incidents of violence in recently conducted panchayat system in West Bengal while substantiating his point on the kind of strict supervision under which the polls in Bangladesh are conducted.

“You have witnessed what has happened during the local election here. Recently, there were polls for Bangladesh City Corporation elections. There was an incident where one individual was being jabbed. Not only the offender but those around were also arrested. One individual was heckled during a recent by-election there. The Election Commission of Bangladesh took strong action against him,” Mahmud said.

He also refuted international allegations regarding human rights violations in Bangladesh.

“What the supporters of Donald Trump did at the Capitol after being defeated in the last elections? How George Floyd was brutally killed there. Nothing of that sort happens in Bangladesh. We are in a much better position as regards to protection of human rights,” he said.
