Udupi, Aug 11: Dr Udaykumar Barkur, a distinguished author and the head of the Department of History at Mangalore University, breathed his last on the evening of Friday, August 11.

Hailing from Herady in Barkur, Dr Udaykumar endured and triumphed over the most challenging circumstances during his formative years. He pursued his education at the Government Primary School in Nagermutt, completed his secondary and pre-university studies at the National Junior College in Barkur, and obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from St Mary’s First Grade College in Brahmavar.

After successfully attaining his Master's degree in History from Mangalore University, he embarked on an illustrious career in academia, contributing significantly as a professor at the university. Dr Udaykumar's scholarly pursuits continued as he completed his doctoral studies, ultimately ascending to the esteemed position of Professor of History and Head of the prestigious Department of History at Mangalore University.

Throughout his tenure, Dr Udaykumar authored numerous essays and articles, presenting thought-provoking papers on history and sociology, with a specific focus on the struggles and experiences of marginalized communities. His academic dedication extended to international engagements, including visits to various universities abroad, where he shared his expertise as a resource person for seminars and higher studies. His profound insights and contributions solidified his standing as a widely recognized historian, particularly within the coastal districts.

The untimely and unexpected demise of Dr Udaykumar represents an immense loss to the academic landscape of the University, leaving a void that will be deeply felt by his colleagues, admirers, and students alike.
