Udupi: Wild elephant destroys plantation crops, trees in Hebri

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Aug 13: Wild elephant menace has entered the Udupi district as well. Crops have been destroyed by the pachyderms at Udpinamakki area of Badatingale in Nadpalu village.

The wild tusker which entered Bhujanaga Shetty's farm uprooted five arecanut trees and three other trees.

Locals urged the forest department officials to take action as this is the first time a wild elephant has entered this locality.

Hebri zonal officer Anil Kumar said, “No one has seen the elephant attack on Thursday night. However, the dung that was found fallen near the uprooted trees proved that the elephant had indeed entered the farm. Though our personnel searched nearby areas, no elephant was found in the vicinity. It must have come from the Chikkamagaluru forest area.”

Stop forest land encroachment. If politicians or film stars are easily permitted to build farmhouse resorts in forest area how do the animals be comfortable. Please leave forest area alone it's given by God to animals. Let them be happy just as we are. Don't allow encroachment in reserve wild life area please. They the wild life have the full right to live in their area please leave them alone.

Rita, now I can connect the dots and get one of the main the reason for so many advertisements for sale of large estates/plantations surrounding forests; these sellers have good foresight; just sell the estate to some dumbo and scoot!

Mr. Lan, they say that elephants are intelligent and humane. I read in one newspaper recently, that a herd of elephants in Tamilnadu, entered a plantation of a large banana trees. After eating bananas, they destroyed all but one banana tree. When checked, why that banana tree was not destroyed, they found that it had a nest, in which 6 small baby birds were there.

To add, elephant is a much venerated animal; but when it comes on somebody's head and does a huge loss all these attributes are conveniently forgotten; these are the ways we humans behave? BTW, recently a bison was also spotted in the compound of a house! These are indicators of the seriousness of man-animal conflict!!
