Poor connectivity from Mangaluru airport poses hassles for intl travellers

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (EP)

Mangaluru, Aug 14: Mangaluru is the only international airport in the state other than the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. However connectivity from the Mangaluru airport to overseas destinations is not free from hassles.

Though there are direct flights to Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Dammam, Doha, Dubai, Kuwait and Muscat from Mangaluru, they do not operate on a daily basis.
But, there are no direct flights to Jeddah, Sharjah and several other places from Mangaluru where a large number of non-resident Indians live. Also, there is no direct air link to Singapore and Maldives.

Representational image

Direct flights to most countries from Mangaluru are not being operated at suitable times and as per the need. Given the number of international tourists flying from Mangaluru there are not many flights made available to Doha, Abu Dhabi and Kuwait. Though there are international airlines flying from Bengaluru and other international airports in the country, Mangaluru is deprived of facilities.

There is only one operational weekly flight to Kuwait from Mangaluru that too on a Sunday. As there are holidays on Friday and Saturday in Kuwait the
flight schedules do not suit passengers who wish to travel to Kuwait. It is possible to fly from Kuwait to Mangaluru via Mumbai but passengers have to wait for seven hours. Therefore non-resident Indians say that such flights operating from Mangaluru do not help them .

There are students arriving from abroad to the undivided Dakshina Kannada
district which is identified as an education hub. There are also people travelling overseas for jobs and tourism purposes. But relying on connecting flights and spending more waiting time in the airports and also shelling out more money seems inevitable. Airlines say that there is a scarcity of aircraft and it is difficult to obtain permission as per the agreement.

Scarcity of planes to fly inside the country

Mostly Indigo flights fly to New Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune from Mangaluru. Air India flies only to Mumbai. Also, there are no direct flights to other places. It was said that a new airline will be made available for Mangaluru airport. Though Go Air, Akasa, Vistara, Air Asia and other airlines have held discussions in this regard, none of them has reached a logical end.

There is a growing need to introduce additional flights to Colombo, Malaysia, Singapore, Maldives etc at least once a week to promote tourism. Airlines
will be requested in this regard, said Ganesh Kamath, president, Canara Organisation of Commerce and Industries.

Mangalore is in the hands of goons and this has been a monopoly. Though airlines like air arabia, oman air, salam air and many others have requested for landing rights, but our govt is only keen to operate Air india express where they can encash high charges for the seats booked. When other airlines come into competition, they are sure their market demand shall loose. With such thoughts, people are not getting what they want and in such case what is the use of terming as "Int'l airport" ?? It is absolute nuisance, but we have choice and have to leave with it.

Had it not been integrated into Karnataka, the regions of Undivided DK/Udupi/Kasargod, Kundapura, and the Southern Ghat sections would likely have thrived as a top-tier state. The Karnataka administration appears to be wary of the potential Mangalore area holds, perceiving it as a challenge to their development approach focused on Bangalore and Mysore

Even the spice jet which was flying from Mangalore has stopped its operation, why no body knew. Vistara still not planned to use Mangalore, hundreds of Mangalorean's live in Bahrain but we done have proper flight to Mangalore? limited flight to Kuwait. why cant Air india itself can not start. we done need Budget carriers, what is the meaning for the common flyers by paying high price and get nothing? at lest give more luggage option free like SRILANKAN airline, minimum 40KG is a must, in all international sector. earlier in Cathy pacific we could carry 40KG without any issue. why cant these airline adopt that policy. instead simply say RUNNING LOSE

As long as we have useless MP's and MLA's we don't get more international flights. Mangalore airport will remain as it is. Our MP's and MLA's are busy in cow, love jihad, communal disharmony and criminal activities. They don't have time for people. We ourselves to be blamed as we always elect useless people.

On Gulf flights, we have to pay a high price and don't even get good facilities & we have no other option so we choose same flights but ticket price which is 3 times more price than normal so can reach early home. Govt. should take action and give way to other airline companies soon to give service in Mangalore Int. Airport.

Mangalore Int. Airport is busy catching gold from Gulf flights...? but direct flights from Gulf are too expensive in price & if they give a chance to new airlines it'll affect the present flight company so no one is bothered. if you see Kannur Int. Airport they have many daily flights from the Gulf countries. Hope we also will get a new big flight company to join Mangalore airport soon..

I see most of politicians encourage pollution industry in DK like MRPl and plastic industries than getting environmental friendly like tourism, educational, technology, Medicare and air, sea transportation. Mangalore has everything Rail, sea , air. It is a matter of more connectivity through air to Middle East. North America or Europe to direct connectivity to Mangalore with reasonable prices

They cannot arrange bus to Mangalore airport. You need rely on private transport only. What a pity!! One bus every hour to Mangalore and Udupi -Manipal will be most useful. One city bus to Bajpe city and Mangalore every 30-minute 24X7 will be ultimate. As Surendra Poojary said....our MP/MLA's are useless.

Metro will take a long way. The development of Thokur Railway Station close to the airport, is long pending. Currently trains don’t stop for passengers at this station due to absence of proper access roads and other facilities. Right now there is need for local train from Puttur to Kundapur catering to both commuters and air passengers. Unfortunately our elected representatives either lack vision or will for development.
