Sonia's Illness: Time for Rahul to Take up Bigger Roles?

Daijiworld Media Network

New Delhi, Aug 6: Congress chief and wife of former Prime Minister of India, the late Rajiv Gandhi, is in the USA for treatment. Latest reports have confirmed that she has been operated successfully, and is on the road to a quick recovery.

She had been in the ICU for more than 24 hours before she was shifted out. The news comes as a big relief to the Congress camp, as not many know the exact reason for her illness. Congress spokespersons have been only briefing the press that she is recovering after her surgery in the USA, and have refused to say more. Her son Rahul Gandhi, daughter Priyanka Gandhi and son-in-law Robert Vadra are with her in the USA.

In the political circles the development is being seen as an indication that its time for Rahul Gandhi to take bigger responsibility in the Congress, and get set for a major political role in the nation's affairs. Before she left for the USA, she had given power to four senior leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, which in itself is a sign of a possible transfer of power to the young soldier of Congress.

Meanwhile, Sonia's absence at a time when Congress is riding on rough waves has indeed caused problems for the party. But the opposition and other political parties have shown good spirit.

Narendra Modi, who is known to criticise Sonia Gandhi very often has prayed for her speedy recovery. He tweeted and conveyed his best wishes and prayers for her.

Amitabh Bachchan, a one-time close friend of the Gandhi family who later drifted away for political reasons, also wished Sonia Gandhi. He said, "Hum toh yahi chahte hain ki Soniaji jald hee swasth ho jaayein. Humaari duayein aur shubhkamnayein unke saath hain (We would like Soniaji to recover as soon as possible. Our prayers and good wishes are with her)."

Telangana activists are reportedly planning to withhold their protest until she is back in India. One of the MPs who belongs to the Telangana region said, "She is like a mother for us, we have immense respect for her. We will stop our agitation temporarily."

Prayers are being offered by Sonia followers and well wishers at several temples, churches and mosques around the nation.
