Mangaluru, Aug 23: The department of sociology, St Aloysius College, organised a sociology fest, the second edition of ‘Socius 2023- Imperfectly Perfect – accepting it” on August 23 in LCRI hall of the college.
Entrepreneur and environmentalist Jeeth Milan Roche was the chief guest. Professor of marketing and co- chair, MDP at MICA, Dr Falguni Vasavada was the resource person and registrar of St Aloysius College, Dr Alwyn D’sa presided over the programme.
Addressing the gathering, Jeeth Milan Roche said, “Humans are insane species living on earth. It is very important for the present generation to preserve the biodiversity. The actual fact is that India is covered by only 3% with forest. Hence saving 3% of the greenery is the duty of every person. It is the responsibility of every parent not only to invest in their children’s education, but also in nature as well.”
Dr Alwyn D’Sa in his presidential speech said, “Perfection is the enemy of excellence. Society and individuals are always with high expectations. Believing in stereotypes, we always tend to wire ourselves with perfection. Hence, this fest will pave a way for breaking all those myths and also trigger more ideas that empower the society.”
Dr Falguni Vasavada as a resource person enlightened the students with her words of wisdom. She said, “Perfection comes from stereotypes and biases, patriarchal society, popular culture, gender roles and generational trauma. In order to break these stigmas and stereotypes, unlearning certain things is more important than learning and that shows the true mark of education.”
She also opined how women are portrayed in advertisements and also how advertisements play a significant role in imparting the values of imperfections. Further, she said, “Everything looks good, when you start feeling good in yourself. In the imperfectly perfect world, one should adopt certain notions as to self-loving and unlearning things, to break the biases and other gender stereotypes.”
Meanwhile, resource person Dr Falguni Vasavada was felicitated by St Aloysius College.
Dean of arts Dr Roseveera, assistant professor and HOD of sociology Joan Rita O’Brien, and student coordinators Akinesh and Aathish were also present. The formal function was then followed by various cultural events and competition.
Joan Rita O’Brien, welcomed the gathering and briefed about the programme. Niranjana compered the programme and assistant professor, department of sociology Savitha D’souza proposed the vote of thanks.
