Udupi: We studied about Akbar, but not about Rani Laxmibai, Shivaji - Shobha

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (JD)

Udupi, Aug 23: “We always studied ‘Akbar the great’ in our history textbooks but never studied about Rani Laxmibai, Shivaji the great, Rana Pratap or Swami Vivekananda who fought for the freedom struggle. But the Centre under the leadership of Narendra Modi has taken efforts to teach these facts to children” said  Shobha Karandlanje, minister of state for agriculture and farmers' welfare.

She was speaking at the special photographic exhibition organised by Central Bureau of Communication Mangaluru on the Independence Day, on poor people's Welfare, Prime Minister's Mission for India-2047, Central Government Schemes, PM Pranam and Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat at Poornaprajna College here on Wednesday, August 23.

Addressing the students, Shobha Karandlanje said “This programme has been organised by the Central Bureau of Communication to spread the word about the development activities carried out by the central government. Our prime minister wishes to organise these programs in every district. We have never read about the social and freedom fighters of our nation in our textbooks. A big photo with very little information was available in our textbook about even Gandhiji. There was little information about Gandhi's life in South Africa or even about his role in the freedom struggle. We never studied from our history textbooks about our greatest universities like Nalanda,Takshashila or Kashi. Thousands of students were coming to India to study in these universities. As per the historians, books were being burnt continuously for two days by the attackers. They took away the good things of our nation and also destroyed the good things that we had. We have the British ruling mentality even today as we even have their names for our institutions and pathways. To overcome this mentality our Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to become Aatmanirbhar and today we are moving towards becoming self-sufficient and self-reliant. IPC codes are being changed and around 1500 laws which were earlier used for punishing our freedom fighters have been quashed by the Modi government. By 2047 we will be moving towards becoming the world leader by achieving top position in various arenas. This is the  greatest goal of our prime minister Narendra Modi,” she said.

Yashpal Suvarna, MLA Udupim Dr Raghavendra Rao, principal, Poornaprajna College, Udupi, G Tukaram Gowda, field publicity officer of Central Bureau of Communication Mangaluru division and students were present on the occasion.

Independent India's first government in power, which was heavily in colonial hangover, did some willful disservice (whitewash of History) to negate the divisive forces that Jinnah represented and ironically, the Queen and her fair colored subjects were acting from behind. SC Bose, Veer Savarkar and the likes were not spared, let alone Shivaji or some of the hero of the past. In this sense, it was a history rewritten in favor of those occupying the seats vacated by the colonial masters. Akbar is the seminal example of blatant propaganda making in to our whitewashed history books. Bring Siddu into the mix, he will nix the NEP and will immediately start celebration of Tippu in favor of resuscitating Tippu Jayanthi and daylight appeasement which was Congress's favorite pastime when in power. If this is not colonial hangover or willful historical twist intended to prey on innocent minds in favor of political aspirations, what is it?

Mayya, I accidently pressed agree for your comment, so minus one from that agree. we studied enough about SC Bose, if you were sleeping in the class during that time, it's not our fault. What you think we should learn about Savarkar? You should happy that the government did not added his apology letter to the queen proclaiming himself her slave. I think the governments should include a copy of his apology letter in the school syllabus from now on.

@ Mr. KS Mayya, History is the study of the past that we haven’t physically seen. As you said it can be biased, distorted, twisted, edited or censored depending on the ideology of the authorities. For instance we were taught both about the brutal killings and atrocities committed by emperor Ashoka on the people of Kalinga and then about his repentance later, benevolent rule and conversion to Buddhism. But in case of Tipu while there is mention of his bravery, achievements and other positive aspects, nothing is mentioned about his fanaticism and atrocities committed on the so called kafirs. Despite hearing about his brutalities from our ancestors, we had to learn whatever was taught in school. Facts will always remain facts. Truth will always prevail. It’s no use banging our heads and taking sides.
