Media Release

Mangaluru, Aug 26: The post graduate department of clinical psychology, St Agnes College (Autonomous) visited Hongiranan and Mussanje old age home, Mangaluru on August 23.

The objective of the visit was to spent time with the elderly residents, understand their living conditions, offer companionship and support and administer psychological assessments. Upon arrival at the old age home, the students were warmly greeted by the staff and introduced to the residents. The facility appeared well-maintained, with a serene and comfortable environment. The students engaged in various activities with the residents, including games like memory building, passing the ball. These activities not only provided physical and mental stimulation but also brought smiles to their faces. Students arranged a musical performance where some residents showcased their musical talents. Others joined in by singing along, tapping their feet and enjoying the melodies. Students spend time talking individually with the residents, listening to life stories and offering our companionship. This personalized interaction seemed to make them feel valued and cherished and also provided them with some necessities. The students also administered psychological assessments as part of their curriculum.

The visit to the old age was a rewarding experience for both the residents and the students as well. The joy and gratitude expressed by the elderly residents highlighted the importance of companionship and the positive impact that such interactions can have on their well-being. It also reminded the value of acknowledging and respecting the wisdom that comes with age.

The students intend to continue to visit and explore opportunities for regular engagement with the residents as these interactions contribute to fostering a sense of belonging and reducing feelings of isolation among the elderly.
