Senior customs official ends life a day after CBI raids his premises in Mumbai

Mumbai, Aug 27: A customs officials killed himself a day after the CBI raided his premises in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai on August 26.

The deceased customs superintendent is identified as Mayank Singh. The CBI officials raided his premises based on a case of corruption registered against him on August 24. The sleuths of CBI said that Singh was accused of taking bribes to clear two bills that were pending with the customs department from two companies.

According to the information provided by the Navi Mumbai police commissioner Milind Bharambe prima facie the death of the customs officials seems to be suicide. He said that a case of ADR (Accidental Death Report) is registered by the police and matter is being investigated. A suicide note was also found said to be written by the deceased.

A case of causing financial loss to the government was registered on August 23 by CBI against two private firms and a senior official of customs involving in a conspiracy. Statement of CBI said that case was registered against two private firms based at Thane, Goregaon and superintendent, Bond Section, Jawaharlal Nehru Customs House situated at Raigad Maharashtra.

A check to this effect was held at bond section of JNCH by the CBI accompanied by the officials of JNCH. The report says that goods covered under two bills of entry were kept on hold by the Customs Intelligence Unit belonging to two private companies. Penalty of Rs 496000 and Rs 956000 were slapped on the said bills of entries.

It is said that the two firms entered into an agreement with the superintendent of the bond section of customs department and got the goods released without paying the fine, which caused huge loss of revenue to the government.

Based on the complaint and raid at the bond section of the customs department, residence of deceased Superintendent of customs was raided by the CBI sleuths.

    Is ending life a solution ? How much harassment will his family go through in the coming days ? All his accounts will be ceased, they may not have money even to buy groceries. He should have faced the law than taking this cowardly step. Accept that you have erred and face the punishment. Didn't you know the consequences when committing the crime ?
