Uttar Pradesh, Aug 9: In a rare case of a medical condition known as uterus didelphys (double uterus), an Indian woman with two wombs stunned experts in the field by giving birth to two healthy sons from each uterus at the Mati Sadan Parijat nursing home in Muzaffarpur.
The woman by the name Rinku Devi (28) from Bihar knew that she was carrying twins. But she had absolutely no idea of her medical condition. "I got to know about having two uteruses when I was already in labour pain," she said.
She added, "I didn't know how to react. I was in pain and quite scared. I had not heard of anything like this before. I got to know about the rarity and severity of this condition days after my delivery."
Doctors discovered that Rinku had conceived her sons a month apart during successive menstrual cycles.
Gynaecologist Dr Dipti Singh who had never handled such a case before delivered the premature babies weighing 4lbs 4oz and 3lbs 3oz by caesarian method.
Rinku had delievered her first baby four years ago. Dr Dipti said, "Rinku was not aware that she has two uteruses despite the fact that she had delivered her first baby four years ago."
Pregnancies involving a double uterus are often fatal for the mother as well as the baby. Healthy births are quite rare such that an average of one case is reported each year in the world!
