Mangaluru: Netravati river dries up in monsoon, cause for concern

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Aug 29: Drying up of Netravati and Kumaradhara rivers, lifeline of Mangaluru and other parts of Dakshina Kannada during monsoon has caused concern.

The vented dam in Thumbay stores Netravati river water which is supplied to Mangaluru city. However, the drying up of Netravati river in the month of August has given a severe drought indication in the coming year.

There are chances that drought like situation may arise in Dakshina Kannada well before the onset of summer next year. In some areas, only knee height water is seen in the river. Just a few days ago, both rivers were flowing to the brim. Now the inflow is very slow.

Though the month of July saw heavy rains, the weakening of monsoon in August has caused river, ponds and rivulets in Dakshina Kannada to dry up.

In this year’s summer, as the monsoon got delayed, people faced severe shortage of drinking water. Rationing of water was done in Mangaluru city due to non-availability of sufficient water in Thumbay dam. The weakening of monsoon in August has caused concern not only among agriculturists but commoners too, as this will lead to severe water shortage in the summer months.

Process sea water for drinking. Utilize used water for irrigation instead fresh water with separate pipe line. Spend money on these projects instead of election road shows unwanted political shows etc. See middle east countries , they do not have proper rain. Still they do not have problems for water.

Hope the CM monitors this rackett in Mangalore carefully.

If we do not get some rains in the coming days, without an iota of doubt, we will have to face severe shortage of water in the coming months. I wish and pray that God takes pity on all of us and gives us rains at least next month. Yes, we are certainly responsible for this situation. Senseless cutting down of trees and Yettinahole project may be the reasons leading to all this. A lot of buildings have come up around us and the builders have cut down the trees left, right and centre. Nobody is even thinking of planting some saplings. Unless we all get together and go on a tree planting campaign, the situation is bound to worsen in the years to come.

It is wrath of God against Mangaloreans. Every house has a well. But no one used it. It is now contaminated with sewage water. Our storm water drains were flowing throughout the year with sewage. Why God should give rain when we silently observed how rain water gets mixed with sewage. At least now visit your well, test water, take legal action Mangalore city corporation and Pollution Control Board. Still lazy. U can't escape wrath of God for failing to protect rain water.

Now only, all start praying everyday for rains to avoid drought or previous summer water shortage situation. Without prayers God also doesn't provide or with prayers God stops greedy elite using their weather modifying through HAARP machines may be in communist china or by liberal elite in america (alaska). All these years normal rain, this year June and August no rain only in month of July ? This definitely man made, rain directed to china or somewhere so india suffers economically ?

YETTINAHOLE --project --- The main purpose is to divert nearly 24 TMC (or 672 billion litres) of water from the head-waters of the Netravathi river towards the water-scarce districts of Kolar, Ramanagara, parts of Hassan, Tumkur, Chikkaballapur, Bengaluru Rural and Devanahalli Industrial Area, – -- This is with assumption most water is wasted and goes into the ARABIAN SEA at mangalore ---- but this is not the actual case --and reality -- THIS HAS CAUSED ENORMOUS DAMAGE TO DAKSHINA KANNADA IN THE PROCESS -- A HARE BRAINED SCHEME OF SHRI VEERAPPA MOILY -- but we have to blame all associated parties and politicians -- despite various campaigns by environmentalists -- IISC scientists --and Other Reports

Even if there is no water in the river there will be plenty of water below it. Here is where radial or " French " wells are useful. Ahmedabad in Gujarat had hardly any rains but people ( more than 70 lakh population) got enough water from the radial wells in the Sabarmati river, before they got water from Narmada canal.Even in Rajasthan at many places lot of water is obtained from the now "extinct" Saraswati river bed radial wells. Another option here is to allow sand extraction in the Netravati river bed to deepen it to store more water,( raising the dam height will require land acquisition which again will be very costly). All lakes, ponds and waterways should be desilted to recharge ground water. Another option is desalination plant which is costly and will have to be funded by the State government. Lastly people should not waste water it is a percious commodity.

Agree with your comment. We have to live in harmony with nature, in Japan it is called "Satoyama ". Do not destroy forests there is noone to argue for them in Courts. Also do not kill animals and birds for food.

We and the government is responsible for this. We destroyed several tree in the name of development and construction. Destroyed western ghats in the name of yethinahole and road widening projects .. MRPL and surrounding companies destroyed our environment by releasing harmful chemicals into air and water. After all this, now government is pushing for tunnel work at Shirali ghats which will destroy thousands of acres of forest ..

The most foolish and insane --and astronomical cost / damages--- of Yettinahole project is one of the many causes of this disaster -- -- no benefits to any region -- supposed to go upto Chikaballapur -- but already Rs 25,000 crores approx spent and need another few thousands -- Crores----for eventual results -- (In the process Trees -- forest cover -- natural streams -- other anticipated hazards -- all well documented by experts which would happen is now being evidenced -- )--
