Union Cabinet approves Rs 200 cut in LPG cylinders with eyes set on upcoming polls

New Delhi, Aug 29 (IANS): With eyes set firmly on the forthcoming elections, the Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved reduction in prices of LPG gas cylinders by Rs 200 for all connection holders.

In addition to this, the Cabinet also cleared the proposal to give 75 lac new LPG cylinders connections under the Ujjwala scheme, thus taking the total beneficiaries to more than 10 crore across the country, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur told mediapersons after the Cabinet briefing.

As of now, the price of domestic LPG, which is used in the kitchen for cooking purposes, is Rs 1,103 per 14.2-kg cylinder in New Delhi. This will now come down by Rs 200 per cylinder.

Domestic LPG cylinder prices were last revised on March 1, when they were hiked by Rs 50 per cylinder.

The decision comes with Assembly elections scheduled in four states in December and Lok Sabha polls are to be held next year.

Oil marketing companies (OMCs) have been reporting heavy under-recoveries due to lack of hike in prices of domestic cooking gas.

Under the Ujjwala scheme, the government provided free LPG connection to women beneficiaries in rural households.

The beneficiaries already get a Rs 200 subsidy and now there will be further Rs 200 cut for all domestic LPG connection holders, Thakur said.

He further informed that the new connections are being given to those beneficiaries who have been added owing to marriage of girls and issuance of new ration cards.

Thanks to the good offices of Indian Government with Vladimir Putin, we have had relatively calm fuel prices as well as LPG. LPG prices were raised for a long time, and this reduction could have been affected long time ago. Also, considering the slow down in China, oil prices are expected to hold or go down from current levels. Either way, escalating prices beyond the Rs. 1000 could have been avoided - especially when Government was deriving windfall tax (tax on windfall profit derived from selling refined petrol/diesel to Europe and US using Russian oil. This is over and above the tax oil companies pay on their regular profits) from the oil companies. However, I must agree that we no more have shortage of LPG and deliveries are received within a day of booking it at least in Bangalore. Regardless, abki baar bi BJP sarkar.

What's the current status of GAIL gas? They collected a deposit from us three years ago. If I had kept that money in my bank, I would have earned an 8% interest. It seems like they might be using our money for these gas subsidies. Globally, both gas and oil prices have decreased. Interestingly, they initially raised the gas price by 50% and then lowered it by 5%, which essentially results in a net profit

Only election time gimmick. They will be raised as soon as elections are over. Ab thak mehengai ki maar gareeb aur madhyam income people. All food products and groceries are rising every month steeply, the reason is withdrawal of them from Essential Commodities Act to facilitate their unlimited hoarding to benefit Hamare Do. They buy cheap and hoard them until their prices rise and make bumper profits. Second major factor is imposition of GST on them, the last factor is High fuel rates which have cascading effect. Vote wisely and end this Hamare Do insensitive sarkar.

BJP IS SCARED OF DEFEAT in the forth coming elections and now want to reduce prices by wooing people to vote for them!!!??? More than 9 years looted the Public in Multiple Crores and supported their close Gujarati business bros. This is clearly for election purpose and NOT FOR THE BENEFIT OF PEOPLE... Why didn't they reduce 4 years earlier???
